Series consists of material documenting the United Fruit Company’s evolving relationship with Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr. (1887-1940), a Jamaican-born Black nationalist and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Letters include detailed reports of Garvey’s activities while in Panama/Costa Rica and document the UFC’s eventual cooperation and support of his visit. It also includes records related to groups he was associated with, including the Negro World and the Negro Improvement Association. Records include internal UFC correspondence, a telegram from Marcus Garvey, and a blank Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League certificate.
